My research started whilst I was mindlessly scrolling through Instagram -

[INSTAGRAM : an online mobile photo-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and share them on a variety of social networking platforms]

- I came across one of the accounts I follow, Plastikmagazine, and I spent a long time trolling through their profile and became hooked on the iconic theme in the way that it ironically pointed fun at all different elements of popular culture.

Self-described as “an independent, award-winning Visual, Fashion, Culture and Arts magazine, with a reputation for ground-breaking photography, fashion and editorial” and with the motto “plastik is a state of mind”, I fell in love with its fun, bright colored palette and the subjects that it dealt with in such a light-hearted manner.

As an avid user of Instagram, it got me thinking retrospectively of myself as a user of this mobile photographic technology AND how I could potentially combine concepts of mobile technology, photography and pop culture into my own project.

I followed links to other profiles that really caught my attention. I wanted to see how I could integrate mobile technology in a fun and humorous way into my own photos.

Each of the images I have chosen combine some sort of political or social comment, implanted within an image of pop culture or a representation of modern technology. This is the style that I want to achieve.

I just copied and pasted a stock photo of 'FREEDOM OF INFORMATION' over another stock photo of an iphone to see what it would look like

I started to think about how I might be able to use the ‘lock screen’ of an Iphone to represent something being 'unlocked'

In the weblink is just an example of what I was thinking - the image 'freedom of information' which is 'locked' inside the technology of the smart phone is an ironic representation, as technology should be liberating.

It also got me thinking that it would be fun to present the project entirely on an Iphone?

I liked the idea of integrating signs and symbols of globally popular apps into my own photos, as these are signs that are globally understood and I thought this was as an interesting link between mobile technology, photography and communication.
