Routes leading out of the Melbourne Centre

We started by drawing out the routes around the Melbourne centre, showing each area and its nearest exit point. Our plan was to create 360 degree photos of our fire escape routes to help people learn the evacuation procedure by viewing this in a realistic way. The photos we took give the feel of what its like to be in the centre. We also recorded sounds to bring the photos to life and to provide a real centre experience for those who have never been here.

An example of instructions or signs around the building directing people to fire exits

We used a digital camera to point out safety awareness signs, fire exits, alarms and first aid points to make people notice these areas more and how they can be helpful in case of an emergency.

Digital Sound recorder

We recorded sounds to let people know what it sounds like in the centre. We recorded sounds of water running, people working ,typing on a computer, the phone ringing, the printer and flushing a toilet. We used a digital sound recorder to capture noise and atmosphere. We hope that by familiarising the sights and sounds of the building people will feel calmer when they hear the alarm.

Alice showing us where the fire assembly point is

This assembly point is an important area to make people aware of it. People need to gather here as quickly as possible so that the fire marshal can check that everyone has safely got out of the centre. All of the fire escapes lead to this point which different groups of workers will come out of depending on the area they are working in.

Fire marshal Hi-vis vest

The fire marshal checks that the signing in sheet matches the number of people based at the assembly point. This is why it is very important that everyone that comes into the building signs in and out. If anyone who is on the list isn't stood at the assembly point , the fire crew would know who to look for.
