Sir Walter Raleigh is commonly believed to have introduced tobacco into Britain in 1586. However, Spanish and Portuguese sailors had been smoking tobacco for many years before. It is likely that the habit of pipe smoking had been adopted by British sailors before 1586 and as early as 1565.
