The biography of Stan Openshaw

I completed my PhD (RADPOP: A new modelling framework for radiation protection) in the early part of 2017, my viva was on 30th November 2016 and I passed with minor corrections. As I reviewed my final document, I was reminded repeatedly of the work of those academics who had gone before me. One name that stuck out was that of Professor Stan Openshaw, an expert in Geocomputation of all shapes and forms, a futuristic pioneer, and a diverse connoisseur of academia, from nuclear warfare to artificial intelligence.

I decided that I wanted to honour Stan's legacy by putting together a biography of his work. After discovering that he spent time at the University of Leeds, I spoke to Dr Andy Evans, who is a personal friend and the current director of the Computational Geography Group (CGG), to gain some guidance on what to do next. He sent me in the direction of another Leeds geographer, Andy Turner...

Andy had previously worked with Stan as part of the CGG in the late 1990's, and had organised a Festshrift at GISRUK 2012 to commemorate Stan's work.
